Wow - U14 men 100m is 12.84 but U15 100m is 11.84 ... that's a very big jump of a full second!

U16 men 11.74 is only a further 0.1 better than U15.

200m is even worse: U14 men 26.44 vs U15 24.24, that's 2.2 seconds faster!

Thanks Simon. That's interesting. Massive 1 sec jump in the 100m. I'm a bit slow on the pick up on this but I just realised last night that what ever time Catherine does in the U14G 80m Hurdles wont make any difference for Aths NSW Nationals because she is meant to now compete in U15G 90m Hurdles in order to get qual time for Nats. Am I correct? I know the boys have already started in the 90H but the girls have not. Does that mean in NSW Junior the girls will do 90H because that leads to Nats and does that also mean I should start putting her in 90H in AA meets if we want to qual for Nats?
Thanks Simon

I've just posted a summary of the full hurdles specifications from Athletics Australia here: Hurdles Specifications

Age groups change as of 1st January ... so assuming Catherine turns 14 years old in 2022, then from 1st Jan 2022 through to the 31st Dec 2022, she will be running the U15 specification which is 90m @ 76.2cm

I'd need to confirm this but I'd think that you are correct in that any 80m hurdles races done this year will not help with Nationals qualifications for 2022 because of those specification changes!! It's a bit of a pain how that works.

My son is also affected because he is running 90m hurdles now, but as of 1st January 2022 he will be running 100m @ 84cm - so it doesn't matter what qualification times he does for the remainder of this year in the 90m hurdles, it won't help get him to Nationals.

That being said - right now, we are focused on preparation for state All Schools in December, so we'll stick to 90m for him now and then move up after that.

I know some people are running up an age group for the remainder of the year (ie running a higher specification hurdles) to help with this qualification process for Nationals next year - but personally we'll just focus on current specs for All Schools first and then refocus on Nationals after that.

Standards for automatic qualifying to Nationals in 2022 can be found here - https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/cups/aa/files/lyfzwejulz4bbaw8.pdf

Important note from the bottom of that document: "The first three placegetters in their own State Championships may also enter without meeting the standards above"
I noticed that the requirement for 200m Hurdles in U15 is only 31.54 and I think both Zak and me could achieve that time before nationals, but it is for U15 and I’m not sure if we would even be allowed to enter if we got the qualifying time. Do you know anything about this?

First thing to remember is that 200m hurdles for Athletics NSW is 10 flights, compared to 200m hurdles for Little Athletics which is only 5 flights ... so the times are not directly comparable.

Now, for All Schools in December 2021, the rules explicitly forbid 12yo (born 2009) athletes from entering the 14yo (U15, born 2007) 200m hurdles.

1.6 Athletes in the 12 & 13 year age groups must not compete in the following events: 5000m, 200m hurdles (13yrs exempt), 400m hurdles, steeplechase, 5000m walk
However, for the 2022 Nationals, you will actually be U14 age group (turning 13yo in 2022), so that wouldn't apply anyway - and I'm not sure what the entry requirements will be.

So you won't be able to use All Schools to qualify for Nationals in 200m hurdles because you won't be allowed to compete. However, you should be allowed to enter the U15 200m hurdles at NSW Juniors in 2022 and use that as qualifying for 2022 Nationals - either based on time, or if you come in the top 3 and thus gain automatic qualifying.

Very interesting that they use twice as many hurdles, but it is a possibility that I will be able to qualify at State Juniors whether by time or top 3.

Thank you for this information I will relay it to my mother and start looking at more hurdles training ( I will also be trying to qualify for the 90m H).

I've contacted the Competitions manager at Athletics NSW and he clarified that it does not matter if hurdles specifications change on Jan 1st - a top 3 result at All Schools will qualify you for the NSW team to compete at Nationals at the new specification, which is great.

For example: a 13yo (U14) boy coming top 3 in the 90m hurdles at All Schools will automatically qualify for the U15 100m hurdles at Nationals!

It is possible that someone will find interesting such a site on online gambling as 🥇 Best Australian Online Casino & Betting Sites | BetPokies.com - here you can find a lot of good links to honest casinos. Although I'm not sure that it is possible to win at a casino. However, you can at least play for fun!
Those who were born on January 1 of the previous year will feel the best in the next year. They are just almost a year older and stronger.
Yes, the rules are a bit silly.

I would like to ask a question about qualifying.

If I jumped 11m (qualifying mark for triple) at Little A’s state would it still count towards it? Because I think for some events it would qualify you and for some it won’t.

Also when does the period for qualifying end.

Looking at the qualifcation information to make the NSW team (National Track And Field Championships) it does not seem like Athletics NSW consider Little Athletics to be a suitable competition for qualification purposes :(

QUALIFICATION TO THE TEAM
To qualify to compete for NSW in the Australian Athletics Championships, athletes must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
Place First, Second or Third:
  • NSW All Schools Athletics Championships (9 - 12 December 2021)** OR
  • NSW Junior Athletics Championships (25 - 27 February 2022) OR
  • NSW Open Athletics Championships (18 - 20 February 2022) OR
Achieve the 2021/22 Athletics Australia National Entry Standard for the relevant age group and event. Entry Standards must be achieved at a National Permitted Event. NSW events that hold a National Permit include:
  • NSW All Schools Athletics Championships
  • NSW Junior Athletics Championships
  • NSW Open Athletics Championships
  • Australian All Schools Athletics Championships
  • Any ANSW or AA permitted event on the ANSW Calendar
  • 2021 GPS or CAS Athletics Championship(s)

... so because Little Athletics State Championships is not a "national permitted event" (ie it is not an ANSW Permit meet or an AA Permit meet), then it doesn't count.

This is most likely because they will not have the requisite officials required to meet the permit requirements, plus in the track events they do not do wind readings - which is required for all sprints and hurdles races.

It seems like your only chance for qualification will be at Juniors this coming weekend (registration is already closed) and to either come top 3 in your event, or jump 11m.

I'm pretty sure qualifying period ends when Nationals entries close - which is 7th March 8am
